November updates
Hello all. Reminder that all students in 6th grade can pick up some clay that we will use in Social Studies class in the next couple of weeks. We will use the clay when discussing early ancient writing. The building is open Monday-Friday from 8am-4pm. Please reach out if you would like me to deliver the clay to your house.
In Language Arts we are wrapping up our book unit. During this unit, we started each class with a mini lesson on a specific element of fiction (plot structure, character traits, symbolism). After the students had time to read a bit, they completed a journal prompt tied to the element of fiction that was taught that day. We will finish next week as we tie our books into some of the 13 principles of the Black lives matter movement. There will be a written and visual art piece to this closing assignment.
In Social Studies, we are finishing up a week of taking focused notes using Cornell notes. Students will answer the essential question for this chapter (From hunters and gatherers to farmers) on Friday. Our next area of study will be Mesopotamia and Sumer and it will be followed by a unit on justice. During these couple of weeks, we will look at Hammurabi's Code and Ancient African Constitutions Rights and Laws.
We have also shifted our 5th hour or WIN (What I Need) time to reflect what the kids need! We will share a list of which students need to attend 5th hour every morning. It changes every day. Some of the time will be used: working one-on-one, leading small groups to pre-teach a concept, pushing kids to go beyond grade level standards, review before a quiz. We are using daily class feedback and assignments to determine which kids need to report to class each day. If kids are not on the list for WIN on a certain day, they do not need to attend.
November 18th & 19th are parent-teacher conferences. Please have your child come to the conference with you as they will help lead this conversation.
